Smart Anchoring in the Dutch Caribbean (Rope & Chain)

  • Posted 41 seconds ago

To anchor safely when boating using rope and a short length of chain: in the Dutch Caribbean

✅ Use a scope ratio of at least 5:1 in calm conditions
✅ Use 7:1 to 10:1 in strong winds or rough seas

What does that mean?
Let out 5 to 10 times the water depth in total rope and chain length.

📏 Example:

  • Depth = 4 meters
  • 5:1 ratio → 20 meters of rope and chain
  • 10:1 ratio → 40 meters of rope and chain

⚓ Always include a few meters of chain between the anchor and the rope.
The chain helps weigh down the rope and ensures the anchor pulls horizontally along the seabed, improving holding power.
